How do you get tested at the doctor’s for Candida?

Question by : How do you get tested at the doctor’s for Candida?
I’ve been sick for almost a year now with severe digestive issues as well as many other symptoms. I believe I have Candida overgrowth but I don’t know how to get tested and treated for it. Also, how long does it take for a person to get better? I’m getting married in less than 5 months and I want to be able to eat at my wedding. Please help! Serious answers only, please.

It’s possible it could be Candida but it could also be a whole host of other things as well. The best way to find out is to do your best to get a clinical diagnosis. Internal Candida overgrowth is a bit difficult to test for though. It’s not like a vaginal yeast infection, oral thrush, or nail and skin fungus which can all be seen quite easily. If you have an internal fungal overgrowth then there are a few tests you could have done, such as an upper endoscopy, lower endoscopy, a few blood tests, and even some saliva tests. Your doctor should be familiar with each of these types of test and recommend the best one for your case.

In regards to how long it takes to get better, it depends on several factors. How strong your immune system is, how well you respond to treatment, etc. etc. Personally I was diagnosed with an esophageal Candida infection back in 2007. It was pretty bad but I was prescribed Fluconazole by my doc and was better in two weeks, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about in regards to eating at your wedding.

Good luck with your doctor. I hope your visit reveals something worthwhile. And congrats and good luck with your wedding!

How to avoid a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?

Question by ♥Agent Banana Hammock♥: How to avoid a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I am currently taking the antibiotic Cephalexin. My doctor said it is likely that I will get a yeast infection while taking it. Is there any way to avoid getting a yeast infection?

Answer by dolores Pistou

Actually, antibiotics often cause yeast infections. The reason you get a yeast infection after using antibiotics is because antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, both the bacteria (the ones that you took antibiotics to get rid of) and the good bacteria (the ones that help your body fight off yeast infections). As a result the yeast is left to grow without any good bacteria to ward it off. Many people take OTC creams like monistat to treat the yeast infection, but often times that only temporarily fix the problem. More often than not you’ll just end up with a reoccuring yeast infection. The best way to stop it permanently is to re-establish your body’s balance of good bacteria and yeast.

Personally I think the best approach is the natural way. Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there’s an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW – That’s why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren’t changing the source of the problem. They are just killing the yeast they come in contact with, and not balancing the yeast/bacteria in your body and actually sometimes end up making things a lot worse.

Oh BTW2 – That’s also why many times you’ll get a yeast infection after using antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in your body, the good and the bad. When that happens the balance between the yeast and good bacteria is off once again and you get a yeast infection.

Things you can add to your diet (to help promote good bacteria) are live yogurt cultures (or take Acidophilus), plenty of water, fresh vegetables, lots of protein rich foods, whey protein, raw garlic, nuts, seeds, oils, millet, rice and oat brans.

Things you should remove from your diet (to starve the yeast) are all sodas, sugars, fruit, fermented foods, foods containing white flour, alcohol (especially beer), antacids and any product that has yeast or mold.

You can change your diet in conjunction with using the creams that you’ve been using and that will speed up the recovery significantly. But what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution instead. I always feel if there’s a natural way to do something, then it’s best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

There are a few out there, I think they are probably all pretty good. One that I have used and was very effective for me was is yeastrol.

What foods should a person avoid if they have candida?

Question by Rosebud: what foods should a person avoid if they have candida?
I’m trying to find the best cure for candida, and I hear there are certain foods you should stay away from.

Best answer:

Answer by Borderline of Devotion
I’ve heard that people with candida should avoid sugar, glucose, etc. because it provides food for the yeast within your body. I’ve also heard that eating the probiotic bacteria will help to reduce it due to competition for nutrients within your intestines. You can get those from yogurt with “active cultures” in it. I’d double check with a doctor or dietician to be sure, though.

Q&A: What are the best medical test to find out if I have candida?

Question by Sol: What are the best medical test to find out if I have candida?
I am about to go to urgent care but want to know how to assure I am getting the best test possible so I don’ t get misdiagnosed with candida?
Is there anything that can interfere with the diagnosis?

Answer by Mags
Why not start with the home saliva test for candida? It won’t cost you anything and then perhaps you won’t be so insecure about the lab tests which are more specific.

This isn’t foolproof but it might help as a starting point.

1. Before going to bed tonight fill a clear glass about 3/4 full of water – leave it out on a flat surface

2. Tomorrow morning as soon as you get up – spit into the glass before you do anything else.

3. Watch the glass immediately so that you can track the saliva,

4. Make a mental note of the glass image at 3 minutes and again at 30 minutes. Your saliva should be floating at the top of the glass.

5. If it is not floating, if there are strings of saliva hanging down, it it sinks to the bottom it is not healthy. If the water is cloudy, you could have candida.

Okay so if it floats, is not heavier than the water, you are fine, if not, you should be tested. No, there is little that can interfere with testing unless you are trying cleanses on your own. Even then, the presence of candida will be found.

You already know that there are a few different types of tests beginning with a stool sample so you might want to take one with you – well packaged, please.

There is also a blood test to determine the antibodies present which offers a clue as to type of infection.

You might be most helped by a throat culture because once the culture is grown, the type can be determined. This is the way I would go if I were you.

They can also do a tissue biopsy if the infection is systemic – what it will determine is the spread of the candida. This wouldn’t necessarily be done at a first appointment.

You already know that you do not want to leave this condition untreated because it can become systemic and cause even more severe symptoms than those which you are already experiencing.

Your next concern is what kind of approach to take for treatment.

How can I avoid a yeast infection while taking an antibiotic?

Question by hi: How can I avoid a yeast infection while taking an antibiotic?
I am very sick with a sinus infection and my doctor prescribed me an antibiotic. The problem is I really don’t want to deal with a yeast infection. So what can i do to avoid getting a yeast infection and still take the antibiotics?

Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there’s an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body relative to the good bacteria. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW – That’s why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren’t changing the source of the problem. Changing your diet will definitely get you on the road to balancing the yeast and good bacteria, but what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution to help naturally speed up the process.

I always feel if there’s a natural way to do something, then it’s best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

Q&A: How do I rid my body of candida without using meds?

Question by shortcake: How do I rid my body of candida without using meds?
I am searching on line and in books and finding contradicting information. I have read that garlic (fresh), fresh juiced carrots (not store purchased juic), grape seed extract, olive leaf extract and something called pau d’arco help eliminate and then I have to take probiotics not to mention a “candida diet”- can’t find consistent info on what a good candida diet would even be…. help!

Best answer:

Answer by jaclyn
Low carb diets help to “starve out” candida. Simply by keeping your blood sugar low much of the candida will die due to lack of high glucose in the blood stream. That is how low carb helps.

Probiotics such as acidopholus from yogurt also help to crowd out the candida. If healty bacteria like acidopholus is low in your body the yeast can get out of control kind of like how deer populations become too high without natural predators to keep them contained.

Eating fresh lemons also helps to control candida. Drinking (sugar free) lemonade will help. Same with apple cider vinegar.
Pau d” arco is simply a part of a tree bark. It does help to kill yeast, but is expensive. There are cheaper ways to help. The olive oil, grape seed extract, olive leaf all help by reducing carb intake which therefore starves out the yeast.

It all boils down to starving out the yeast or crowding it out with healthy bacteria. Yeast love sugar. If you drink sweet drinks, eat high starches and carbs, you will have more yeast than if you eat lower glycemic choices.

What is the difference between a yeast infection and vaginal discharge?

Question by Alicia: What is the difference between a yeast infection and vaginal discharge?
I think that I may have a yeast infection. What I want to know is this, is Monistat a safe treatment for a yeast infection? I haven’t gone to a doctor to get it verified and don’t plan on it but I want to make sure it’s safe before I start using it. Also, if this is just regular vaginal discharge, will using Monistat bring up any side affects?

Best answer:

Answer by Miss Curiosity
Vaginal discharge is supposed to happen…it’s your body’s way of keeping your goods clean. A yeast infection should have a foul odor and the discharge should be yellowish or of some color and will probably clump together.

I doubt you would have any trouble with Monistat if you don’t have an infection, but you may want to try one of those home tests for yeast infections that they have out now. There is no point in treating yourself for a yeast infection if you don’t have one.

What are the side effects of a candida cleanse?

Question by Kelley J: What are the side effects of a candida cleanse?
I have been sick for about 5 days, and I was doing a candida cleanse for about a week before then. I’m wondering if there is a connection.

Best answer:

Answer by spazchickens
you get a sick feeling(Flu-like symptoms), headaches, aches, or abdominal distress(gas and bloating), blurred vision, brain fog, nausea, etc.

Die-off can last a day to over a week is normal. Depending on how infested you are.

I usually start off slow by first using the anti-candida diet for a couple weeks to a month then going to the candida cleanse. Also your allowed to take half the dose of the cleanse.

Also, it’s good to take fiber to go to the restroom to help flush the poisons out. Flax seed fiber will work well. Also drink plenty of filtered water.

One of the reasons it takes so long to remove a yeast infection is that the death of one yeast cell is food for another yeast cell, which encourages those yeast colonies still living. They are being fed and supported by the internal fluids of dead cells. Until the majority of the yeast colonies are destroyed, the die-off reactions will never completely go away.

What are the best supplements/probiotics to take, to get rid of massive Candida infection?

Question by magnetbox: What are the best supplements/probiotics to take, to get rid of massive Candida infection?
I am too lazy to change my diet, so I’d like to know if there are any specific antifungals/probiotic supplements that work pretty well to destroy an intestinal yeast infection…?

If you managed to cure a Candida/yeast infection, what products or drugs did you take? How well did they work?

I REALLY need help on this as I am faced with a serious health problem that may or may not be Candida overgrowth, but without medical insurance, I can’t get extensive testing done to figure out what condition I really have. However from my own research, it seems likely that Candida is a major component of my long-term illness, if not the whole thing.

Can you treat Candida effectively with supplements/drugs, without making significant dietary changes?

I’m getting all sorts of symptoms now that keep increasing, something like IBS (I feel things moving in my digestive system, and constipation is severe) and blurry vision/eye pain/bloodshot eyes, water retention, fatigue.. I need some help!

Best answer:

Answer by M. V.
Maybe a good flushing, as it were, would help. Ever go to a pharmacy and see a store brand laxative in an old-timey looking bottle? Liquid? (Try a Safeway, or CVS for instance.) Those are most effective and won’t kill you with cramps. Also, try an enema of one part vinegar four parts water. Scoff all you like, both an internal and external cleansing is mighty efficient for helping to neutralize the bacteria. Hope this helps!

What is a good method of Hydrogen Peroxide treatment in eliminating Candida?

Question by Xanthos: What is a good method of Hydrogen Peroxide treatment in eliminating Candida?
How much should I use, where can I find one that I could use internally? Has anyone had success eliminating Candida using this method? Has anyone tried using Ozone therapy in treatment of systemic candida?
I’ve already done candida protocols in the past. I fully understand the diet and supplements and even some advanced therapy. I just need some more insight into the Hydrogen Peroxide and Ozone treatments if anyone can help? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by jacalynfreeborn
Hydrogen peroxide is not effective against candida. If it were to be inserted into an orifice it would just burn and land you in the E room. If someone has candida, monestat or lotrimin will work if it is not severe.
