How do you stop yeast infections from recurring?
Question by …Ms Independent…: How do you stop yeast infections from recurring?
I had a yeast infection in January. I went to the doctor because I wanted to take the pill instead of the cream which requires a prescription. Eventually it went away.
After awhile I notice right before my period I would itch only at the top of my vagina on the outer lip. I notice it was soar and saw what looked like little paper cuts. I went to the doctor and he said its normal for some women to get it right before their period.
I dont think this is normal and I wanna know if any women out there has had this problem and how did she handle it.

Hi – Well, your Dr is right, in a way. It is fairly common to have an occurrence of yeast infection before your period. You are going through hormonal changes and body changes that shift the flora of the vagina. A few things might help. No deodorant vaginal sprays, douches or kotex/tampons. Wear cotton underwear, Don’t wear a pad or shield all the time – it acts like a diaper holding moisture against your body. Use mild soaps that are not highly perfumed in the genital area. Don’t wear tight jeans all the time as that doesn’t allow air circulation. Sleep without underwear when you aren’t on your period. Try probiotics – or at least yogurt to help balance out your system – try to keep sugar under control in those days before your period.
The other thing you might want to be sure of is that it is yeast. There are other things that come and go and itch that should be ruled out. Good luck

I get the itching like you described at the top of my vagina on the outer lips too…but I’ve yet to ask a doctor about it. But maybe it’s normal? I don’t know! I’ll be sure to ask my gyno this week when I go to see her, though! 🙂
Sounds like you are having a topical yeast infection – on the skin only – no discharge….
Consider going on a yeast-free diet, no sugar (as sugar feeds yeast), no alcohol – so no cakes, candy, sweets, etc.
*Take Lots of acidophilus/probiotics or eat Unsweetened (plain) Yogurt
*Avoid tight jeans and other tight pants
*Wear cotton underwear during the day, no thongs
*Wear no underwear to bed
*Put a tsp of apple cider vinegar in a 6-8 ounce glass of water and drink it 2-3 times a day.
*Mix a tsp of Hydrogen Peroxide in a cup of water and pour over the area.
Yeast infections can be controlled by a healthy diet and behavioral changes in your lifestyle.
•Take control of your diet by preparing most of your food yourself
•Eat nutrient-rich, organic (not processed) whole foods.
Optimize your intake of essential-fatty-acid rich food sources through the use of healing fats and oils.
•Eat a wide variety of foods
•Drink plenty of water. Drink half your body weight in ounces (for example if you weigh 120 lbs, you should drink at least 60 ounces of water).
•Drug use, alcohol consumption and smoking lower your immunity – so avoid them (I’m not saying you have to be a teetotaler but moderate!)
•Exercise regularly (it’s amazing how this can help with a whole host of ailments)
•Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep
•Meditate to help rid yourself of emotional and physical stress (try some yoga!)
•Avoid antibiotics like the plague if at all possible. These culprits can promote yeast infections
•Avoid birth control pills if you can as they promote the overgrowth of candida which causes yeast infections
However, the best way to cope with a yeast infection is to get rid of for good – check the link in my sources.
You must change your diet and kill the fungus. What you eat every day is feeding the fungus and encouraging it to grow in numbers at an alarming rate. Once you reverse what is happening in your body you’ll be yeast infection free for life.
