What is the difference between a yeast infection and vaginal discharge?
Question by Alicia: What is the difference between a yeast infection and vaginal discharge?
I think that I may have a yeast infection. What I want to know is this, is Monistat a safe treatment for a yeast infection? I haven’t gone to a doctor to get it verified and don’t plan on it but I want to make sure it’s safe before I start using it. Also, if this is just regular vaginal discharge, will using Monistat bring up any side affects?

Vaginal discharge is supposed to happen…it’s your body’s way of keeping your goods clean. A yeast infection should have a foul odor and the discharge should be yellowish or of some color and will probably clump together.
I doubt you would have any trouble with Monistat if you don’t have an infection, but you may want to try one of those home tests for yeast infections that they have out now. There is no point in treating yourself for a yeast infection if you don’t have one.

A yeast infection may cause itching and can produce vaginal discharge as well. Not all yeast infections will produce a yellow or greenish discharge. If you are unsure of what it is, I would recommend going to the doctor to verify this by a simple urine test. Yeast will show up on a routine UA microscopic exam. There are numerous reasons that you could be experiencing a discharge. Chlamydia, and other forms of STDs will cause you to discharge. Until you know for certain what is causing this, I would have it checked out by your doctor or clinic. I would not try using monistat not knowing first of all what it is that is causing it. If it is in fact a yeast infection that you have, then the next time it happens … you will know, and getting something over the counter would help.
The difference is that vaginal discharge is usually normal for most women and it comes out in a clear form. A yeast infection on the other hand is an overgrowth of yeast in the vaginal area. The discharge is thicker and white like cottage cheese. It will cause itching and burning. Monistat is a safe product to use. It is made Johnson and Johnson which I work for. I have had many woman call me telling me how great the product has worked for them. I have personally used it and also have had good results. I would probably recomend the Monistat 7 day product because it’s not as strong and since you have never used it before you want to be on the safe side.
